When people hear about creating a WordPress site, they start thinking it is a hard process that needs programming knowledge, but this is not the case. The process is simple, and you will be amazed at how easy it is when you are done. There are complicated things that you might encounter down the road, but that should not be your worry when getting started. Here is a guide for creating a WordPress website.
Choose a Domain
This is going to be the URL inside the address bar of the visitor when they visit your site. Choose a domain that is short, easy to type and remember, and matching your brand name or related to it. It is a good idea to purchase a domain when purchasing your web hosting plans because some come with a free domain.
You can have your choice of a top level domain if no one has claimed the name. A top-level domain is a suffix that is attached to the URL like .edu, .com, .biz, etc. You can also find one for a specific industry or geographical location.
Purchasing Web Hosting and Domain
You will need someone to host your website, and this is the work of web hosting companies. Web hosting companies have giant web servers around the world. This is where your website will sit, and you will be paying them a monthly or annual rent.
If you are creating a site for a small internal and private company, WordPress.com will work well. If it is a blog, shared hosting will work well. Cloud hosting is the right option if you are starting a business where you will be collecting leads and/or payments.
When you start getting a lot of traffic, you can upgrade to a better option.
There are different ways of installing WordPress. Most web hosting services out there will provide an easy way of doing this, with most of them having a simple one-click installation process. When you log in to your web hosting account, ignore most of what you see if you are not an expert in web design. Just look for a button that says “Install WordPress”.
Follow the instructions and you will be done with installing WordPress. You will then have the logins.
Your login domain will be www.yourdomainname.com/wp-login.php, but you should change it for security reasons.
Find a WordPress Theme
You need to choose a theme for your website. A theme provides you with a pre-coded and pre-designed interface template. You don’t have to design your website. There is a wide range of options when it comes to WordPress themes.
Install Your WordPress Theme
When you find a theme that works for your site, you will need to install it. Once you have installed the theme, you need to click “Activate” so it can be published. The process of installing a free them is different from the method used for premium WordPress theme.
Once you are done activating your theme, you will need to configure it. Click on the Appearance tab then click “Customize”.
